First off, this is a great song from the Decemberists- but we knew that already.

I think that the trip and New England in this song are images which represent a relationship. My interpretation of this song is that they- a guy and a girl, probably- are taking some sort of road trip ("we'd come seven hours down/took the blue line to see where we hopped out") and they realise that the whole trip was disasterous to their relationship, or vice versa ("you say this was the furthest we had come/travel so far to watch it fall, undone"). By the end of the trip, ("I think I'd rather just wait in the car/And return to the turnpike/and see the New England skyline sinking below"), he is tired of the trip/relationship, and wants to leave New England and/or the relationship behind. This is pretty applicable to me right now, I'm making plans with my best guy friend (whom I've liked for...going on two years now) for the summer to take a road trip, and I really hope that it doesn't destroy our friendship and things. I hope that made sense haha.
