Omg this song is so sad to me cause i can identify with it.I think that it's about a woman "melissa etheridge" who's trying to let go of a pain that hurt her badly,and maybe a lover who hurt her bad in the past,and she just wants to let it go or and it could mean this i read somewhere that melissa was molested by her sister,and i can identify with that because i was too,and i think the chorus " i will crawl through my past over stones blood and glass in the ruins reaching under the fence as i try to make sense in the ruins" is basically like learning how to accept your past,and the mistakes that you made or things that happened to you,and learning to be stronger from it too.
