I think that maybe he is thinking about someone who has died. Someone he loved who is gone, but he can still feel them all around him, being comforted by thier presence. It def seems like that tome, especially during the 2nd verse (i think).

Agreed, especially "if only i could stay overhead in the airway" meaning if only he could be with her in heaven
