Adakias didn't have to die to fulfill the prophecy, as the prophecy as given by Gargul, Ahrima, and Nidria merely states that Light and Dark will be reunited by the love of Adakias and Anhura.
This could've been accomplished several ways, but what better way to prove your love, as demanded by Pallis, than to die for it a martyr? I believe Pallis and Anhura handled the rest, a direct result of the love, and if the people will listen to anyone, it's the royalty. Not that it rules out the possibility of foretold death or anything.
I do agree that Damuya's role is an unsettled flaw in the ending. Personally, I think that Pallis was probably in no mood for him and saw to it that Anhura had safe passage back to the Light.
