"What are young women pushing up against? they would seem to have a whole list of options to choose from; a set of ways to construct their own identity..." there's no need to answer the question, cuz the question answers itself. Its so obviously misogynist -- the idea that women need a list of things to choose from to construct their own identity -- that no further comment is necessary.
Except one more thing it isn't just insulting to think that women need a list, the whole idea of constructing your identity in such a way is totally twisted. If you subscribe to it, than you have to accept that you are not a free agent, that you're just a sort of consumer, consuming one of these available "counter-culture" identities.
