I feel this is about the sad aftermath of a relationship upon which the singer had centered his whole life. She left him saying he would be fine, bis life revolves around her so much he carries their picture inside him (metaphorically).
Afterward, his life is one long chain of the morose and mundane. He's afraid of the "better days" of loving again sometime because of how crushed he was by the avalanche last time around.
