i believe he's primarily suggesting falling for someone while you're with or just getting over someone. the first chorus talks about hard times and struggles in a relationship. when the writer talks about the "car crash" not meaning "we're gonna have to stay" he implies that getting through hard times together doesn't necessarily mean you're meant to be.
