Smith has always been rather pessimistic about religion. His was a rather disillusioned generation, which I think is interesting considering how spiritual he seems in contrast to he strongly nonreligious views. Maybe 'spiritual' isn't the right word. But he does tend to address several deeper/poetic issues than many other artists do.
