This song is NOT selfexplanatory. You have to dig deep to understand its meaning.

For starters, Brighten is telling two stories at once.

I'll start with the first story. It's about a man with children. His hat that he holds represents the way that he lives his life. He works a lot, and barely sees his kids.

The second story is about a girl. When she was younger, she would spend money every chance she could. The money in her pocket represents who she is as a girl, and who she will be when she becomes a women. She spends the money carelessley, selfishly, irresponsibly.

The man and girl, are standing on the same street corner, probably no relation, it's just a coincidence.

The man's children grow old, and remember how their father was never there for them. They don't want their kids to live that life, so they swear they will never wear the hat size that their father wore (this is connected to the hat the father was holding in the beginning of the song).

The girl grows up, and has the same money habits as she had as a girl, and marries guys only for their money and the jewlery they buy her.

The man and girl are symbolic of the "liars out there", and "violence in everyone" because of the mistakes they have made.

They also represent "humble orphans" and "potential in everyone" because they still have H-O-P-E, obviously.

And the two stories come together in one song, only to connect with each other.

this was perfect. (:
