I feel like this is sort of tapping into the neuroticism some people face when in a relationship.
First -
How during the progress of a relationship, you can "discover danger" or realize parts of a person that you feel you can't handle, have been hurt by or fear you will be hurt by in the future.
How some people can become so consumed with paranoia and worry over a relationship (especially if there has been betrayal previously in the relationship) that they can't sort of "see the forest for the trees" or (this might be a stretch) but see the "landscape" and what this paranoia is doing to the relationship ("and all my mountains were on fire").
Second -
Dicussing fears -whether irrational or not- about a relationship tends to go in circles (the "labyrinth"). There is no alleviating someone's paranoia, they have to do so on their own by learning to trust.
"Laughing without smiling" reminds me of... Ok. You know when you tell someone something and they don't believe you, so they laugh? Kind of.. scoff?
As you grow older, you realize a few things about life and your past relationships ("Age brings a sad little surprise"). While involved in a relationship, you can often become so focused on your own feelings ("calculating tears") that you don't realize the feelings of the person that you love ("my head expired").
Anyway. Sorry, that's kind of a lazy version of what I wanted to say. This is a great song. The remix on the Satantic Twins vinyl is awesome!
