I think this song is about how people are afraid to accept the future and that they would rather live present and future life as the past, although what happened in the past may very well be a starting area for what the future will be like (the great depression of 1929 and now we are about to hit another great depression, or a huge war like WW2 and now we are fighting a never ending war in Iraq). People are afraid of the future, but the future is a reoccurance of the past.

No. The song is about coming to terms with the various aspects of a person's place and role in time and the implications thereof. It could hardly be more explicit.

Actually this song has less to do with the future, or even a person's place and role in time than with individual mortality. The singer is constantly aware that his time is limited and is looking for some solution, but keeps realizing that nothing can stop him from dying someday.

Look at the individual sections:

These rational delusions have got to cease The second hand has finally got the best of me I'm too aware about the singularity That brought me to the edge of time And it's always on my mind now

He has faced mortality directly and is...

No. This song is about muffins. It could hardly be more explicit. Alright I lied okay? And I'm pretty sure the lyrics don't go, "And I'm desperate to try most anything to breed." I mean who is he, Tiger Woods? Come on. I think it's supposed to say abate.

Also I agree with CaptainClay. This song reminds me of Cease.
