i don't think it has anything to do with acid. i took it as a metaphor. like the kids are in this "golden" city and have lost their minds.

i think "smiling so hard it hurts, just when things get worse" is about faking a smile when you're at your worst "woe is me!"
i think the reference to satan is about how lightly the world shrugs off sin in this day and age. "keep your trousers on"
