I definitely think it has something to do with a baby, maybe an abortion, premature birth, death soon after birth. "She won't be there with a rattle" would be the baby with her rattle, the one that never gets to grow up.
Christened makes me think that they named it before whatever happened.
Perhaps they broke up after the pregnancy ("forgave her" didn't turn out so well) and he thinks that after all of that, naming the baby and everything, that his girlfriend will have an abortion because she doesn't want the baby alone. So he's blaming himself "But I erased her" for the fact that his girlfriend might get an abortion because of the breakup.
So "her wayward eyes" would be the girlfriend perhaps looking for other men before they broke up (what he tried to forgive her for) and the reason why they broke up.
And all he can think of is the baby that might be aborted because of all this.
The second build up of "oh god"s gives me goosebumps, it's why I love this song so much. What I'm saying could be complete bull but "she won't be there with a rattle" just brings me back to a baby with a rattle and I ran from there.
