They may not have pioneered hardcore, but they're considered one of the most influential bands in the genre. They themselves are the perfect example of a post-hardcore band. Anyway, besides that this is easily one of their best songs. Especially because of the "viva la revolucion" clip in the beginning, it speaks of the difficulties which people face in rising above the limitations they have in society. But the "rather be alive" is important, because it goes on to say that despite all the difficulties they face living it their way, they wouldn't want to "be alive" by someone else's design, and freely is really what makes life worth living.
