I think it is about a relationship that is over and he still tries to make things right and sees hope. While she didn't leave the past totally behind her she doesn't see any future for it and is moving on with another guy, since she only sees the sun fall it means she still thinks and talks about it but sees no hope for them.
I also think in the song he shows some regret for always being there for her, always up to having something with her and now she's with someone else.
