This is one of my favorite songs on "Conquering the Fear of Flight". This song is about a character in "The Great Divorce" (by C. S. Lewis) who chooses Hell over Heaven (as said by Wavorly in an interview). I haven't read the book (it would be interesting to hear comments from those who have..or haven't), so my interpretations may be off-- but here it goes. The main point of the song seems to be that one can have either Heaven or Hell, but not both ("I look for the Light and find that you can't have both."). Still, we try to live in both the ways of good and evil, because it is most comfortable to us ("Between the light and the dark there's a comfortable grey"). However, by doing so, we can't be innocent ("...gray aren't innocent. None of us are."). The person seems to want to stay in a state of "greyness" (thus choosing not to be innocent), because s(he) doesn't want to have to choose between light and dark ("I won't go through this, the divorce is too great"). I love the line "Shadow life, the light is dim and paranoid" and how the light is personified. When I hear this, I picture the light as a small ("dim") creature looking all around itself ("paranoid") where there are dark creatures surrounding it from the shadows ("shadow life").
