I believe the chorus is a little less cryptic, as in "if I am the message, then you are the machine", being a metaphor, as in an answering machine on a telephone, and the message that it is storing. So if 'I am the message, and you are the machine", then I have a message to convey, and the person I'm talking to (record company?) has the means to let others hear it. Another idea is that as a message needs the machine to have any relevant purpose, it could just be a metaphor for need for another in a relationship?
