I've heard or read rumors that this song is about Pete's brother Rick, who is a very successful manager to stars i.e. Leo DiCaprio and Cameron Diaz. That might explain the line " I was in the door" which might have been what he thought when he was young and green and newly arrived to LA. Maybe he thought he wouldn't have to work so hard but he found out differently. Maybe his brother set him straight and Pete realized he did have to put the work in. He did too; paying his dues playing clubs in LA for quite a few years before he got a record deal. Who knows though. Pete's songs tend to be very abstract.
