I'm not sure if he's returning to love his current wife and child (as mentioned by terriblyvexed) or if its after his third wife leaves him (anneke) and he is pining her and their daughter Lorina. When his third wife left him he was too sick to physically go to "the mountain bed" however he could've been revisiting the spot and occasion in his mind. Who knows.
