While I agree the message is don't fear death, I do not think the narrator is dead. The lyrics read "And she took his hand.... She had become like they are"
He says THEY, not US, so really, we can't assume he is dead. Possibly ushering a close friend or family member to the other side, or telling them it's Okay to let go and not to fear the reaper. But I agree on its base meaning.
