Where have all the idealistic junkies gone?

I played this at my 18th birthday bash when my best friend wrote me from rehab, "Don't change, you're beautiful and free, you have books and needles and ideas and therapy, it's more fun this way, no one ever changed the world sober and I'll be dead by the time you turn 30 but you're my heroine."

So I drank and I danced and I cried for my friends who'll die to this, all the wonderful people who refuse to settle and live long and boring lives. Because it's stupid and self-destructive and wonderful. At least we have our bookshelves and the certainty we won't get old, even if this isn't living but dying.
