i think this song is obviously metaphorical. the person who wrote the lyrics chose to depict his failed (or failing) relationship by relating it to an addiction to narcotics. i definitely think the point of view of this song is from a person who has been dumped, since he talks bout being "released", and the tone is obviously bitter..."so you faced it with a smile...a trifle's more than this". i'm pretty sure those lines were meant to be sarcastic. i can definitely relate to this song, which makes me like it 9348934 times more. plus, the melody is addicting (no pun intended). :]
