Back in 2002 I had the experience of knowing some very serious drug addicts. These drug addicts identified with this song heavily and told me that the true meaning of this song was about drug addiction.

Agree totally 100%. Video confirms it to me when it says "He couldn't stop...so she left". The dancing is a metaphor for the drugs. And then he dances to bring her back. That's the insanity of addiction. An addict loses someone they love because of their addiction and the only thing they know how to do is to use more to kill the pain and reminisce about the good times.
