Personally, I feel as if this song is about someone who pretends to be a martyr but doesn't truly believe that that's who they are. Or someone who doesn't know or REFUSES to acknowledge that they are not worthless. The narrator is someone who is close to them/cares very much about them.... but can recognize these unhealthy behaviors and wants this person to calm down and come back to some semblance of rationality because by growing up and being productive that's how they can "shine".
Mostly I get this from the lines "You’re the one to whom nobody verses I love you/Unless you say it first" & "And I think you need to stop following misery’s lead/Shine away shine away shine away/Isn’t it time you got over how fragile you are".
Anyway, I'm admittedly probably biased because I'm in the process of ending a relationship with a guy who is so damaged but constantly pretends that he's not. He has so much potential.... but refuses to truly shine because he's such a "black sheep" and that's not what people like him does....
Still, no matter how off point my interpretation is.... it's another beautiful Anna Nalick song. :)
