i see this song as a story about either slugs relationship, orr a some other characters relationship because on this album he does have alot of stories from other peoples perspectives, but to me it seems the first verse is about the main character's (wether or not its slug) girl meeting a guy somewhere but shes "gotta lover in the midwest" (main character/slug). then the second verse is the main charachter and girls rocky relationship. like the main character is never there hes always out he "thinks hes a star" and my favorite line "or is he gonna run away with the dish and the spoon". then the third verse is about the main character's ended relationship with the girl. " its time to walk that path and grow a backbone, shoved into the big book of just friends"

yea soo thats how i interpreted it at least. and if the main characters is slug himself which it could be cause like "he thinks hes a star" while hes up and comming in the underground game and how hes always writing about his relationships, its pretty cool cause it would be putting him in the second guys place and not the first one ( guy that the girl meets) and the first one is the one everyone should like. slug is a lyrical genious no matter what peace

I think your pretty close but I feel like the Slug is describing someone else in the first verse (Which could be anyone, not just Slug). It's someone who wants her and he's describing this person situation

But he always did his best to get under the surface Not a saint, not a serpent He just wanted everyone to be impressed with him as a person

--Then this girl maybe him happy.

So when she came along with the sunbeam Self-esteem stopped making nothing outta somethings Leaving the scene was unseen, I mean It was the first time he ever felt the need...
