I think she's trying to say that this guy cough Lance cough promised her the world but when push came to shove, he was just full of it and didn't stand by her like he promised. the line,
"Butterflies are free to fly, and so they fly away And I'm left to carry on and wonder why"
Makes me think that he left her for another woman, or just left her. As the song goes on she also begins to doubt herself. In the first verse she says:
"This isn't how it's really meant to be
No it isn't how it's really meant to be"
It's almost like she's trying to convince herself. Then she says:
"But is this how it's really meant to be
No is it how it's really meant to be"
Now it's like she's questioning it and wondering if she'll ever find love again. It's a touching song and I love it.
The first time she sings 'This isn't how it's really meant to be. No, it isn't how it's really meant to be' and she seems fairly convinced that the way things are is wrong. To me, it sounds like more of a statement than a question.

The second time, however, she asks 'Is this how it's really meant to be? Now is it how it's really meant to be?' it appears as if she almost expects the answer to be 'Yes, this is how it's meant to be.'

@dustinator I agree about the doubt.
