Dez was raised a catholic, but read his lyrics and it becomes painfully apparent that he has turned from that path:
"Is there a promised land?
Or am I on the journey going to nowhere?
Are the streets paved with gold?
Or am I slipping on the mold that slowly grows there?"
-Hes questioning his faith..
The songs general meaning however is that he seems to feel that 'god' has equally turned his back on him as he had to 'god', and that all the promises made were simply lies... The entire album seems to be a possible medium by which he describes the terms of his beliefs on religion, namely christianity
To me, the overarching theme is putting the bullshit aside and ceasing the excuses. Whether this is breaking up with a toxic friend, religion, or self, the point is personal responsibility and letting go of being a victim to life. It's a much needed slap in the face. Finding that inner strength to carve your life

I always took a majority of lyrics being directed at another person who betrayed him but I like the idea of it being a deconversion manifesto

Maybe it's simultaneously and at different parts of the album a rejection of abusive people, abusive religions, and abusive self talk
