I dont believe that the song is cynical per se, merely about a girl that has no romantic feelings at all towards the guy, a user and well he knows it, but her voice captivates him anyway and he cant help himself. As for the video, that gives it a nice angle. (How the US didnt appriciiate a-ha at time, according to the director..note how the girl wears the us flag)
