This song is certainly about cults, but I don't believe the video has anything to do with symbolism.
It's actually a clever remake of Bobby Van's Vaudeville type song and dance number "Take Me to Broadway" from the 1953 movie Small Town Girl.

So you can compare. Take a look at the details like the car in the beginning and the hoping dog at the end. It's almost exact with the exception of some fantastic modifications that update the time period of the video to present day.

I agree, I don't think the lyrics and music video are connected. "Take Me to Broadway" was an awesome find. They were extremely similar.
