Well, I don't know this for certain, but my theory is that this song is about Jesus.
Jesus, being Captain Sunshine, makes him drink wine. I don't think that this wine-drinking is in order to get drunk, or get a buzz on. I believe that the wine is Holy Communion.
"Walk so pure between the earth and the sea" Jesus was the only one who lived pure, without sin, in His lifetime on earth.
I don't exactly know Neil Diamond's beliefs, so I could be totally off, but that's what this song means to me.
