I do think that at least his mother died. As he feels his death calling to him as "he feels the pull beneath his feet" he hears "her" calling him from the other side. Also the child is left weeping alone.
I think that the bridges do mean the many challenges one must face in life. It could be suicide, but I think that its just him acknowledging that his time has come, and he is ready to surrender himself to the waves/death.
