it seems to me like it's about repetition, it's a story about a lowdown guy, always broke, but he was musically talented, stopping one relationship to go to another, then ending that relationship to move on to another, he lies saying it's love, but the girls are always so naive they believe him, but he did care about them, hence the line "Cause he knows if he hangs out for a few hours
He'll dig another hole tryin to plant some new flowers" and now all these women/girls just watch from the crowd, trying to keep some sort of connection with him, even though they know it'll never happen.
