Ballad is about (singer) + (person singer likes). How love can be our undoing? (the first verse is a little vague). How he tried to control, and tame his love... and didn't appreciate how amazing she (or he... but I'll go with she for the moment) is, and how he's now willing to take her place if anyone tries to do it to her again, much in the same way someone who is a walking dead man is likely to sacrifice their life for another (and by dead man, I mean a person who is about to die and knows it).
It's a little sad, but so romantic.
