Pinkerton didn't do well because it wasn't as commercial. It's darker, and deals with some intensely creepy awkwardness, which is why it has such a cult following.

Anyway, it's about him getting some broken english letter from a Japanese fan. He becomes emotionally attached to her even though he's never met her, imagines her masturbating, sniffs at her envelope, etc, and ends up writing this song about her.

Weezer really took off after the blue album, and in the song he attaches himself to the fan because he's longing for something more.

"As if I could live off words and dreams and a million screams, oh, how I need a hand in mine to feel. Why are you so far away from me?"

The girl was super young, too. That's why he says "I could never touch you, I think it would be wrong."
