Tolhurst's drug problem was with alcohol, specifically — one of the worst when it comes to addiction and general life-ruiningness; although it has a much higher LD-50, in some ways it's even more dangerous than heroin because it's (1) legal and therefore easy to obtain, and (2) easier to self-administer (even when you're already f***ed up).
