parts of the song, particularly the first set of verses/chorus, refer to (i believe) the "john" character in "the green mile". john, at one point, says that he's tired of being alone..."lone as a sparrow in the rain". (i checked with google--it isn't an actual saying, and it doesn't come up anywhere else on the internet)
also, in the same part of that verse, pete sings:
"When someone said I done gone wrong,
Couldn't feel no shame"
which certainly lines up with the story of john's character.
