I'm not going through three pages of posts to see if this has already been said or not, so here goes.
There's an article on the internet somewhere (if I cared enough, I'd go find it) of an interview done with Eddie Vedder about this song. First off, it took him all of about 5 minutes to write.
The song is as follows. It's about a woman who has grown up in a small town. Lived there her whole life. And she's advanced in age. And one day, an old spark from her much younger days comes into her store. And at first, she can tell she knows him, but she can't remember where from. He had moved away from the small town. He's driving a car, not too flashy, but not a junker. And she hints at her being the same person as always because she can't change in the small town. He's changed because of the big city, but she's changed by not changing at all. She wants to go up to him and see if he recognizes her. She'd love to talk to him again, but she never does. She knows he now longer feels the same for her, and that he probably won't remember her at all.
That's the what the line "I just want to scream 'Hello!' My God, it's been so long, never that I'd see you return. But here you are and here I am. Hearts and thoughts they fade.....fade away."
