'i got green and i got blues…'

he's got money but he's still depressed. and regardless of how much money he has it still doesn't make any difference to him. so he gets drunk to take his mind off it.

'well i ain't really drowning…'

he refuses to admit that it's a problem. as if he's saying i'm not an alcoholic, i can stop anytime i want. or he thinks he doesn't 'need' to drink, it's just a temporary solution, he has his feelings under control.

'i could take a greyhound home…'

he realises that home is not just a place, it's about the people and the emotions you have when you're there. so even if he travelled to his hometown, it wouldn't be the same as he remembered it. he would still be lonely because that's the frame of mind he is in.

'so i'll take two of what you're having…'

this could be a conversation to a stranger in a bar, as if he's saying my life's worse than yours, i'd take any of your problems over mine. at the same time saying he'll need twice as many drinks to forget about how lonely he is. i think the reason he is so depressed is because he has actually fallen in love, but found that ironically he now feels more lonely than before, perhaps because he can't be with the person, either physically or emotionally.

'I got green and I got blues and everyday there's a little less difference between the two.'

I think this meant he has weed and Oxycontin. Every day there is less and less difference between the 2 because he doesn't care what he is F'd up on as long as he is F'd up to kill his broken heart.

^^ Hahaha, what?? You serious about that? Honestly that seems silly to me for Isbells lyrics. Not to get all nerd on you but what oxy contin are blue? The only oxy's that were blue were the 160mg but they stopped production of those over 10 years ago.. and I doubt he is reffering to some shitty generic brand like Tevo.. of course roxi 30mg are blue.. but c'mon.. Isbell is so poetic I can't imagine that is what he is saying

I think nexttoyou has a great interpretation of 'i got green and I got blues' meaning he has money but...

@nexttoyou 'I got green and I got blues' is clearly framing his existence of drowning his heartbreak in alcohol and drugs. Saying green is money wouldn't make sense in this context, given the second line saying there isn't a difference between the two.

Thus I suspect it is either weed/drugs or even his green state of constant inebriation.
