I think you can pretty much take this song as it first appears, however what would be the fun in that!?
In my opinion its an attempt at getting over someone he really loved, and I'm not sure, I've devised one of two meanings.
He is still desperately in love with this girl 'I look out the window for a cloud, That you might be under', showing how even every day things revolve around her, and how he's struggling to accept that she can go on without him. Then it gets confusing for him 'the sun is going down too early' he nearly had her and then lost her, cause of the light, but essentially because of the argument or whatever ended the relationship. Next 'embers' shower his eyes, it gets painful for him thinking of her.
So now is where I get confused 'Would I be lying here with you' could either literally mean that he has moved on and found someone else, or he is still lying with the person who has left him, but just his memory of her. Because then it goes on to say 'in an empty bed' which suggests its just him imagining her there, and being selective about the bits he loved about her, which is why he is almost convincing himself he's glad she's gone.
'So far away it almost hurts' was at the start of the relationship the feeling is remember 'common ground' the things that they had in common with each other and what started their love in the first place. This was 'square one'. Then it snowballed and they became totally infatuated 'baby steps get bigger'.
Again I get confused at this bit too, it could mean he was actually holding her close, and now she has left its 'an empty bed'. Or it could mean he dreamt of holding her close, the bed remaining empty. Choose whichever.
Next he's begging this girl to either get back with him, get with him in the first place or yeah, whichever, 'promise me forever','ill wash it away for you/give it all up for you' its all these things he'd be willing to do for her. I think his shadow is symbolic of what he has become after all this thinking he's done about her, its turned him into quite an introverted and confused person.
'no more pain', would suggest that the song means he had the girl and he has now lost herand moved on. 'no more shame' suggests that he either never had the girl (tht he used to imagine he was with) and he no longer imagines it, or he had the girl and now no longer imagines her, so im not sure on that one either.
So thats my take on it, quite possibly utterly wrong.
