I think this is about how lonely you can feel when you had a setback in life, and that you really need someone to talk to.

When you feel like you´re on top of the world and thought that nothing ever could change that and then something happens that makes you feel like shit.

When you´re sad and alone, and wished that someone called you. Not really shure about the "everything"-part, someone help?

To refer to the book/movie "into the wild", its important not necessarily to be strong, but to FEEL strong.
I think its about that he really wish that someone said something nice to him that could cheer him up, and how important it is to say something nice to each other sometimes, it could really make someones day, even if its a lie.
