Oh, and as far as we could figure out, the animals are representations of memories in the singers (Charles Furney) mind. They prey on him and influence how he acts in life, and in the end when he realizes that nothing can ever be perfect, he has to give the whale back to his memories in order to find peace again. Maybe all of this is a little far fetched, but this is just my take on it.
