Imo just like you've all said, it's about him putting in all the effort into the relationship. Whether it be sharing his past with her, helping her cope with her own demons, whatever the obstacles they face, he seems to be always giving but never on the receiving side.
He knows that she's one tough cookie to keep a hold of, but He knows that regardless of how complicated she can be, she'll always be his girl especially since they've gone through a lot of shyt together, and they'd be foolish to let go of eachother after that. Sometimes he finds it hard to believe that she's still his, after all the problems that life has thrown at their relationship and as Matthew said he appreciates her because of that.
