I think what this song is about is two lovers, the man singing the song, the woman being sung to. Here's my interpretation:
The first verse and chorus is about when they first met, and the woman left a deep impression on him, even though she might not have tried to, or realised that she had. No other women ever had the same effect on him. I think where is says, "what fortune lent you" it might mean that she is exceptionally attractive.
In the second verse and chorus, I think she has learned to use her beauty to be attract lots of men, but when her admirers find out that she doesn't really love them, they will "rob her blind, of what they gave", meaning love, and she will be alone. Where it says "cry about where fame sent you" I think it means that this happened to her, and it left her broken and lonely.
The next verse is about him saying that he told her all this would happen, basically, and she didn't listen to him.
The last verse is where they end up getting married, and he's happy she didn't listen to him, because if she had, she most likely would have ended up with a different guy. The brand new sidewalk mentioned I think is her life, and now it is clean and brand new again, not broken like before.
