Erykah Badu is trying to describe the United States and the various persona's perdominating it. These personas represent the despair we are in. She's trying to create the real image of America that people are trying to avoid. Erykah says we know the history of slavery and it's implications in modern society, hence the example of the shooting in the black ghetto. hence horizontal oppression.

She's trying to tell us that we must keep marching and remember the hardships that we surpassed and we need to keep pushing forward for a better future.

The United States plays the part of a country of freedom, but a lot needs to be done before we hold that title.

"They know who we are" Indicates people denying postmodern racism.

She is trying to unite and knows that everyone wants to rise to the next level of enlightenment and freedom. She calls on the listeners to say "Yessiree" if they agree and then proceeds to give a lyrical beat hymn to unite them.

Simple unifying music.
