in the first verse i think there's a strong reference to drugs/substance use:
"And medicine makes us move inside a little slower
And in those hours nobody knows our ends or beginnings"
and it makes sense with the strangers theme, being in an altered state of mind could make friends seem like strangers.
also, the german engineering industry is(was?) the top in the the world. so i think in a way they could be talking about losing all your preconceived ideas, knowledge, or what you've learned to discover the world for yourself.
