in greek mythology the lotus flower, when consumed, caused a person to forget about their woes and to leave their lives behind. although I dont believe this song has anything to do with the book Itry is referring to, it has the same idea. It sound to me as if the character is trying to forget his woes, including the divorce of his parents. he is pushing his friends away, and wallows in his own self pity: you are a killer and you target yourself. there seems to be hints of other problems from his past(All those years caring for a liar) but it is difficult to make much out of the broken imagery. either way, this song, like every other from opeth, kicks ass. Opeth is the best band of all time!

it's methaphorically speaking of alcoholism, but the reference to greek mythology is probably quite literal. The lotus eaters are in mythology a warning of the dangers of addictions and there are some clear references to the myth: " A barren waste is your land, Crops they were sown to die." In mythology they forgot of everything, even their work, crops and animals, they just became addicts to the lotus fruit.
