As i've listened and listened and listened to this song...i've decided that this song needs to be thought of like a play.

It seems that there are several "Acts" to this "play". You can recognize the next set or act when the melodies change.

The first act from "It's taken me 50,000 separate wrecks to get here" to "Into the sea... into the great sea." It seems like he's saying that he has tried fighting against this storm for a while and has given up trying to fight against the "current" or his own short comings. He's given up hope and sees the world and his life as lost. So he stops fighting and just lets the sea take him to where ever it will lead him.

The second Act is when he repeats, "So I begin with the end in mind." Its like he's come to terms with it and just thinks about the end of it all, death.

Act 3 - Then in the grips of death and completely letting go. Its like God contacts him. The angels call to him. They tell him they've been waiting for what seems like an eternity to be with "you". (cause in the end its about us, right?) He calls out to us when we need him most.

In the last act - Its like Heaven has given him the reason to get back up and try again. And learn. (In the song it actually doesn't say anything about the three miles and the dragon. - it really could mean anything. Maybe the writer or the band is revealing something about his or their own past, maybe only real fans that catch it are open to it...anyway miles could be a length of time, and dragon could also mean anything, drugs, addictions or even the river.) what i do know is its saying that no matter how often we fail, or how often we fall, we will always have heaven there to remind us who we are and how much we are loved and wanted.

So he stops thinking about death as an escape (doorway), but like reading the last chapter of a mystery noval, you know the ending and what your working for. And in the end what your working for is a home that this world is boring in comparison. You get back up, remember its not the end and even if it is...it's not so bad.
