Sounds reminiscient to Clocks to me. Especially if you've seen Clocks live during Twisted Logic - the drums sound a lot like they did in the beginning at Toronto at the beginning of Clocks.

I think the Lovers in Japan title connects with the lyric... "dream of the Osaka sun". Osaka in Japan is believed to be the first place that the sun sets... fresh every new year. So I think Coldplay is sending the message that Lovers should metaphorically fight on and move on like soldiers because a new day/ sun will come for them. = )
