I think he's in love with this girl, and will do anything to prove his love for her ("I'm ready to beg and to sing for my sins.") But he seems like he doesn't really take it seriously, with him kind of brushing off friends telling him she's gone... almost like a joke, like yeah, yeah, "bring her home tonight." He is just waiting to find out whether she wants him, too, or if she'll choose someone else.
In the last stanza, he thinks she's left him, but it turns out his friends know her better than he does, and she's really just "burned" from a fight. ("They said you was burned out, I just laughed and said 'come one, she's not burned, she's just gone...' They laughed when you said you was leaving, everybody knows you well, except for me, can't you tell?").
I love this song, it's so beautiful, one of my favorites.
It almost makes me want to cry.
