i think in this song there probably each others first loves but it ended they're still close to each other and know they love each other but it just doesnt work when there together....she probably passed out at someones house or a party and he couldnt just leave her there so he carried her home to her bed hoping she would not awake and he could just get out before she woke up then she wakes up and is surprised to see him but happy...he realizes he just cant stay ...he just wants to tuck her in get her set and leave...well that not what he wants to do because as he stares at her tired self he just wishes with all his heart he can be with her again so in his mind hes questioning how it could work...but then the chorus kicks him which is him denying her and just realizing he just needs to leave his "reality check" but then it goes back and forth between him loving her and what he wants to do vs. what he "should" do
honestly, that comment made me kinda tear up because you just explained it perfectly. ive known this song for a while now and loved it so much but never could explain why. i think this story is basically just like what i'm experiencing right now, so i think this song really is.. kind of special to me.
